SAND TESTING LAB

A sieve shaker is used to separate and classify particles of different sizes by passing a sample through a stack of sieves with different mesh sizes. The sample is placed on the top sieve, and the shaker vibrates the sieve stack for a specified period. Particles are retained according to their size, while smaller particles pass through to the lower sieves. After shaking, the material retained on each sieve is weighed to determine the particle-size distribution of the sample.

A permeability tester is used to determine the permeability of moulding sand by measuring its ability to allow gases, such as air, to pass through it. A standard sand specimen is prepared and placed in the permeability tester. Air is passed through the specimen under controlled conditions, and the time or pressure required for the air to pass through is measured. The permeability value helps assess the ability of moulding sand to allow gases to escape during metal casting and helps prevent defects such as blowholes and gas porosity.

A Universal Strength Machine is used to determine the strength of moulding sand under different loading conditions. A prepared sand specimen is placed in the machine, and a controlled load is applied until the specimen fails. The machine measures the strength of the specimen, such as compression, shear, or tensile strength, depending on the test setup. The results help evaluate the bonding and strength of moulding sand and its suitability for producing sound and defect-free castings.

A Rapid Moisture Tester is used to quickly determine the moisture content of moulding sand. A known quantity of sand is placed inside the tester along with a suitable moisture-reactive reagent. The tester is sealed and shaken, causing a reaction that produces pressure inside the chamber. The pressure reading is used to determine the percentage of moisture present in the sand. This test helps maintain the required moisture level and ensures proper strength, permeability, and quality of the moulding sand.

A Clay Washer is used to determine the percentage of clay and other fine materials present in moulding sand. A measured quantity of sand is mixed with water and agitated in the apparatus so that the clay particles become suspended in the water. The suspension is allowed to settle and the clay-rich water is removed. This washing process is repeated until the required separation is achieved. The remaining sand is dried and weighed to calculate the clay content, which helps in controlling the quality and properties of moulding sand.

An Electronic Weighing Scale is used in a sand testing laboratory to accurately measure the weight of sand samples and other materials. It helps in taking precise quantities for different tests such as moisture content, permeability, clay content, and strength testing.

A Shatter Index apparatus is used in a sand testing laboratory to determine the resistance of a moulding sand specimen to impact and breakage. A prepared sand specimen is dropped from a specified height, and the amount of sand broken into smaller particles is measured. The test helps assess the toughness and breakdown characteristics of moulding sand after casting.

A Sand Rammer is used in a sand testing laboratory to prepare standard sand specimens by compacting moulding sand to a uniform density. It applies a specified number of ramming blows to the sand sample, ensuring consistent compaction for tests such as strength and permeability.

A Rapid Dryer is used in a sand testing laboratory to quickly remove moisture from sand samples. It helps dry the sample uniformly before testing, reducing the time required for moisture removal and ensuring accurate and reliable sand test results.

A Sand Muller is used in a sand testing laboratory to mix and condition moulding sand uniformly. It helps blend sand with moisture, clay, and other additives and distributes the materials evenly throughout the mixture. This produces consistent sand properties and prepares the sand for moulding and testing.

A Core Baking Furnace is used in a sand testing or foundry laboratory to heat and bake sand cores at a controlled temperature. Baking removes moisture and hardens the core binder, giving the core the required strength and rigidity. It helps prepare strong and stable cores for casting applications.
